The total trade between India and the UK in Aluminium and articles thereof has increased at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 18.6% over the past decade. The total trade between these two was GBP 19.6m in the year 2000. It touched GBP 100m in the year 2008 when it grew by more than 70%. This was the highest growth rate in the last decade. The trade in this sector showed negative trend in the year 2001 and 2007 when the trade slipped by 3.46% and 0.98% respectively. However, the biggest slide i.e. 13.97% was registered in the recession period i.e. 2009 after the all time high trade of GBP 105.99m in 2008. India and the UK were head to head in the year 2000 when the trade surplus for the UK was at GBP 1.63m only. However, UK has consolidated its position tremendously with time. The trade surplus for the UK reached zenith of GBP 61.87m in the year 2009.

  • UK’s total import of Aluminium and articles thereof from the world stood at GBP 2.5b in the year 2009.
  • UK’s import from the world dropped by 10.05% during the recession period as compared to a drop of 51.27% in case of India during the same period i.e. 2009.
  • India’s share in the UK’s import grew slowly but steadily till 2008 when it saw the highest share of the decade at 1.08%.
  • However, the share dropped significantly to 0.59% in 2009 when it reached the levels of 2000.
  • UK’s total export of Aluminium and articles thereof to the world was GBP 1.61b in year 2009.
  • UK’s export to the world dropped by 31.94% during the recession period as compared to the growth of 0.81% in case of India during the same period i.e. 2009.
  • India’s share in the UK’s total exports grew significantly from a mere 0.7% in the year 2000 to 4.74% in the year 2009.
  • UK’s export of Aluminium and articles thereof to the world grew at a CAGR of 0.73%, much lower than the UK’s import from the world at 5.10%.
